A Beginner’s Guide to Essential Oils

At the Zoi Clinic, we carry a wide variety of Essential Oils and Tinctures to address any symptoms you may be suffering from.

Used with consistency, essential oils can help address a number of chronic illnesses. For example Basil, Grapefruit, Sandalwood and Balsam Fir oils are very high in monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes – these biochemical constituents work to clean receptor sites in the nerve bundles in the spine. Which then go on to help to remove toxins (along with  bad bacteria and viruses) from the tissues and cells throughout the body. They also assist the body’s process of clearing out damaged and mutated cells while at the same time regenerating healthy “happy” cells.

And if fast acting relief is what you’re looking for, then look no further. When a purely distilled essential oil touches the skin, it takes only 22 minutes to reach every cell in the body and begin to work the positive effects I mentioned above.

Now, some times several different essential oils can be used to address the same illness. But different Oils affect specific symptoms as well. Ahead, I’ll lay out several types of oils and their benefits. As well as highlight a specific benefit for each.

Basil

The health benefits of Basil oil include its ability to help alleviate nausea, motion sickness, indigestion, constipation and respiratory problems. Basil oil is also a good source of Vitamin A, magnesium, potassium, iron, and calcium.

Stress Disorders: Basil oil has a refreshing effect when it’s aroma is inhaled or the oil is consumed. So it is used for treating nervous tension, mental fatigue, melancholy, migraines and depression. Due to the calming nature of basil essential oil, it is widely used in aromatherapy. Regularly using this essential oil provides mental strength and clarity.

Grapefruit

The health benefits of Grapefruit oil can be attributed to its properties as a diuretic, disinfectant, stimulant, antidepressant, antiseptic, aperitif, lymphatic and tonic substance.

Disinfectant: The antiviral and antimicrobial properties of grapefruit oil make it a good disinfectant. It not only helps protect the body from new infections but also helps to eliminate the infections which are already there. It is particularly effective against infections of the colon, stomach, intestines, urinary system, excretory system and kidneys. Furthermore, it is beneficial for oral and ocular infections as well as infections of the skin.

Sandalwood

Sandalwood Essential Oil health benefits can be attributed to its properties as an antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, antiphlogistic, antispasmodic, astringent, cicatrisant, carminative, diuretic, disinfectant, emollient, expectorant, hypotensive, memory booster, sedative and tonic substance.

Anti-inflammatory: Sandalwood oil is very effective as an anti-inflammatory agent. It has a nice cooling effect and provides relief from all types of inflammation in the brain, digestive, nervous, circulatory, and excretory systems that result from infections, fevers, side effects of antibiotics, poisoning, insect bites, or wounds. Sandalwood is particularly beneficial in cases of nervous and circulatory inflammations.

Balsam Fir

Some of the benefits of Balsam Fir oil include its ability to reduce pain, prevent infections, improve respiratory function, increase the metabolism, detoxify the body, and reduce body odor.

Increased Metabolism: There are many factors that affect our metabolism, but Balsam Fir oil can act as a general body stimulant, kicking our body into overdrive and increasing everything from our digestive rate to our heart rate. It gives a boost of energy when we need it and can carry us into a more active lifestyle simply by cranking our internal engine up a few notches.
